What concerns should I discuss with my child's counselor?
School Counselors' focus on three main areas: academics, personal/social, and career and college readiness. Counselors look at the following academic concerns: - when your child is having difficulty in school or making poor grades. - when your child has a high number of absences from school. - when your child appears unable to stay on task, or is bored. - when your child does not complete assignments. - when your child lacks interest in school. Counselors look at the following personal/social areas: - bullying - when your child verbalizes they are depressed or show signs of it. - when your child is dealing with family changes or stressors. - when your child expresses low self esteem. - any behavioral concern. Counselors instruct students on career and college skills: - helping your child see the connection between academics and real life. - helping your child set goals and plan for the future. - helping your child identify their skills, talents, interests, and abilities. - helping your child identify possible career choices, and awareness and exploration into these professions.
